So, Signed Culture has been going through some changes!
We’d just like to let you all know that we’ve had some changes in our Board of Trustees.
Martin Colville stands down from our Board
Signed Culture would like to thank Martin Coalville for all his hard work, knowledgeable contributions to discussions, use of his contacts and friendships, and much more over the last few years. He’s been a wonderful person to have on our board. As he steps down, now able to concentrate fully on his retirement and properly enjoying himself, we welcome in his place John Wilson.
Welcome John Wilson
Many of you will know John from all the various roles he’s had over the years. Let’s start by saying he was one of the founders of Signed Performance In Theatre (SPIT) – the forerunner of Signed Culture (SC) way back 25 years ago! But he has also done much more: presented on TV shows like See Hear and Sign On; worked in theatre as a director; worked as Deaf Arts Officer for Shape and now works in many cultural institutions like the Tate, Science Museum, and Royal Collection as a guide to various exhibitions, and collections. He has recently been appointed as a BSL Tours Curator with the Royal Academy. We look forward to tapping into all his knowledge and experience around the world of museums and galleries, to see what we can do to increase BSL access to this area of the Arts, and maybe standards of access provision too.
Sarah Gatford also joins us
We also welcome Sarah Gatford. She is a fellow BSL/English Interpreter with years of experience under her belt. She has become more and more drawn to the world of theatre, interpreting many shows from musicals to pantos. She has seen how interpreters miss out on learning opportunities within training institutions and elsewhere, so has set up training courses, developing them to include ‘tame’ actors, and directors who can share some of their skills and expertise. Sarah has also worked directly with theatre companies, various museums, schools, provided webinars to the Arts sector, etc etc. It’s great to have her enthusiasm to make the continual improvements that SC is always trying to achieve.
We would still like to increase the board by at least one more person – someone who would like to help us in our fundraising quest. We have several plans for projects that we need to find funding for, and then to make the applications. If you, or anyone you know, fancies this role, do get in touch – email@example.com
